Abbey Community
College opened in September 2002 following the amalgamation of Scoil
Chriost an Ri, St Mary’s College and Boyle Vocational School.
Abbey Community College/Coláiste na Mainistreach is a co-educational
community college operating under the trusteeship of Co. Roscommon
Vocational Education Committee. The school is managed by a Board of
Management. There is also a Board of Governors consisting of one
representative of the Mercy Order, one representative of the Diocese of
Elphin and one V.E.C. member.
The school has an active Parents ’
Association and a strong Students’
Council. Working together as a school community, the Board of Management,
parents, staff and students aim to provide an environment that will allow
each student to develop intellectually, physically, morally, socially and
spiritually so they will be able to fulfil their place in society.
Abbey Community College is the only second level school in Boyle, North
Roscommon, facilitating both urban and rural based students. Enrolment
projections for the next five years indicate an average intake of 94
students per year.
In association with the Department of Education and Science, Abbey
Community College offers a wide curriculum including Leaving Certificate,
Junior Certificate, Transition Year programme and LCVP. In addition we
also provide a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, which caters
for artistic, cultural, social and sporting interests.
Our state-of-the art
school, which opened in 2002, has excellent facilities including a
Lecture/Demonstration Room (which can seat up to 50 students), a
Computerised Language Laboratory, an Information Technology Department, a
Library and specialist rooms for Music, Art, Materials Technology,
Engineering/Metalwork and Technical Graphics and Home Economics. Other facilities include
Basketball Courts, Tennis Court and Football Pitch; there is also access
to a Sport Hall adjacent to our premises.
Abbey Community
College also facilitates a Post Leaving Certificate Course on a separate
campus in the town offering two awards at FETAC Level Five in Business and
